Mr. Freeze, a tragic figure in the Batman mythos, first appeared as "Mr. Zero" in Batman #121 (February 1959).
Originally a comical villain, his backstory was significantly revamped. Victor Fries was a cryogenicist whose beloved wife, Nora, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. He placed her in suspended animation while searching for a cure. An accident during his research drastically lowered his body temperature, forcing him to wear a cryogenic suit to survive.
Driven by his love for Nora, Freeze often resorts to criminal activity to fund his research. His motivations are complex, making him a sympathetic antagonist despite his cold-hearted methods. He is often presented as a scientific genius, and his cryo-suit grants him enhanced strength and the ability to generate ice and cold.
